The hike will be held on this Saturday - Sunday, 17 - 18 October 2009. Groups, please pass your pre-hike log to SPL, Tay Hwee by tomorrow, 16 October 2009.

On Saturday, do gather/fall in opposite the school at 7.15a.m. Remember to bring all the equipments that you will need during the hike. Bring enough food and emergency rationing for all your members. Do not forget to bring your route maps along. Have a few spares incase it rains during the hike.

Dear fellow Scout mates,

It has been a wonderful and great time knowing you all and working together, playing together, and even got punished together.

Many at times, I wanted to quit scouts before. However, I asked myself : Why? Is it because scouts is too tiring? Nope. It's just another lame excuse. I asked myself : Did I regret joining scouts? No. Did I ever hate scouts? No.

I'm now officially passed out from scouts. Yes, I may not be joining the ventures. However : "Once a scout, always a scout". "一日童军，一世童军."

To Yu Kai :
The future of Woodpecker Patrol lies in your hands. I hope you can be better than me. I hope you lead the patrol well and do your scribe duties well. The password is with you. Keep it safe.#

To the SPLs:
Even though you may be younger than me, I looked up upon you when I'm still in scouts. Yes, I'm not ashamed that you are my role model.

To the sec ones :
Listen to your seniors. Don't argue. Aim high. Be an SPL. Follow them, they are your role models. One scout told me that he wanted to be an SPL. Well, work hard. When I come back in 2011, I must see you holding that rank, carrying the whistle around your neck, and that is you Wei Hao.

Scout meetings

Hello Scouts.

There will be a scout meeting tomorrow. Please come down to the scout room at 1pm, after school.

Please have your lunch first.

With effect from 2009, all CCA groups must have at least two days of activities. Scouts is on Friday and Saturday.

The Saturday's timing is still the same

With effect from 10/01/2009, we will all have a "leisure jog" in the morning, for about one round around the school. After our leisure jog, we will have our breakfast.

Some changes to take note of:
- Be present in PT kit, bring your full uniform along
- Bring along your own breakfast. We will have our breakfast after our jog
- The jog is really a leisure jog. Main purpose is not to takan, it's to keep our body healthy (really!)
- We will be building portable flag staff with a rectangle base for all the meetings until we are informed by the school that the field is available for use.
- Scout meeting is at the same time, but the flag break is at 8.30am

Please be reminded that tomorrow will be the scouts tuition, when Howard Sir will bring his team of university tutors to come down and teach us.

It's all for our own good, so please do come down, unless you are super good in your studies.

For next week's meeting, we will be doing backwoodsman cooking - cooking w/o utensils, pots etc.

You have a whole week to pick up dry leaves, dry twigs, and round-based coconut husk (to use as a pot).
Please bring along at least $5 on sat, we are all going to the market to buy our food to cook.

KATONG DISTRICT FUN HUNT 2008

On behalf of the Katong District Survival Course Organising Committee, I am pleased to inform you that the Katong District will be organising our traditional District Fun Hunt for all Katong Scout Groups.

The Fun Hunt is an annual event on the Katong District calendar since 2003. Through the event, participants from the various sections will get to gel together and bond with another, creating friendships that last beyond the event.

Also, for the first time, the fun hunt bears idea of the hunt for fun, where people meet to eat. For the first part of the event, teams will be sent on a fun hunt where clues await at the respective stations, promising a galore of enriching yet interesting scouting activities. This will then lead to the second part of the event, culminating in the Culinary Grand Finale Competition where participants will get a taste of their own delicacies with suggested recipes provided.

Details of the event are as follows:

Event Date: 26th July 2008 (Saturday)
Time: 0800hrs – 1400hrs
Venue: Chung Cheng (Main) High School
(Groups are advised to arrange their own transportation)
Event Fee: $10 per pax
Closing Date: 18th July 2008
Event Capacity: 150 Participants
Remarks: Schools are advised to issue their own consent forms.

Participants are each required to bring the following:
1. A set of metal utensils – fork, spoon etc.
2. A set of mess tins.
3. A personal plate.
4. Water bottle (At least 0.5 litre).

Scout and Guides training camp

Hi all scouts and guides,

I hope that you have learnt somethings from the training camp and also hope it'll help in your life. I would like to first of all give a special thank you to Hui Wen who volunteered as a Asst. Camp Chief and made this camp a more meaningful and yet the same time a fun one. I would like to thank my Ventures and ex-guides too for helping out in the camp and had very little sleep throughout too.

Overnight Expedition 2008 for ASS & FCSS

Once again the overnight expedition is back again. For all sec 2, you will be doing the overnight expedition for Advance Scout Standard (ASS) of 20km. And for those sec 3 who wants to persue the Chief Commissioner Award (CCA) or yet to pass ur First Class Scout Standard, you will be doing a hike of at least 30km. The details are below:

1. Introduction
There are three parts to the ASS hike. Candidates are expected to complete all three parts in chronological order. Should the candidate fail one part of the hike, he will not be allowed to proceed with the subsequent parts. The three parts are:

Part 1: Preliminary report
Part 2: Execution of the hike
Part 3: Exploration report

The exploration hike must take place over the duration of 2 days and 1 night, covering a minimum walking distance of 20km with a total of 15 checkpoints with a start point and a rest point. The start point is not considered a checkpoint, but the end point is. Ten of the checkpoints are to be covered on the first day and five are to be covered on the second. Candidates are to cover at least 16km in the first day, with the remaining distance cleared in the second day.

Candidates are to execute the hike in groups of THREE. No new recruits companions will be attached.

Candidates are to attend a briefing conducted by the examiners before embarking on the hike

Candidates are expected to abide by all rules and regulations governing the test.

2. Timeline
The following is an approximate timeline for the ASS hike process. (To be filled in by candidate during pre-hike briefing)

3. Objectives
To assess candidates’ navigational proficiency as well as leadership and organizational capabilities in planning, executing, recording and evaluating an overnight hike with 4 companions

To impart candidates’ scouting experience and exploration skills to their fellow companions

4. Preliminary report
Candidates must submit and pass the preliminary report before being allowed to proceed to other parts of the hike

The preliminary report must be submitted 7 days from the date of the exploration briefing or as stated in the timeline above, whichever is earlier.

The preliminary report must include:

- Personal particulars.
The candidate’s and companions’ personal particulars. Include any pre-existing medical conditions. Please include vital information for use in case of emergency. Please also include all signed consent forms in this section.

- Start point and checkpoint
a. Please indicate the MGR of the start point and all checkpoints, bearings and walking distances between checkpoints. In the remark column, fill in any lesson plans or meals to be taken. Candidates are to fill in this information in the prescribed format attached to this Guide.
b. Candidates are expected to exercise initiative in the selection of checkpoints
c. The checkpoints and start point must not be within the 3km radius of the candidate’s school
d. It is recommended that the start and end points be near the Scout HQ
e. Candidates must not have visited the checkpoints prior to the test
f. Recycling of checkpoints used in previous expeditions is not allowed
g. The types of checkpoints are restricted to the following categories and must consist of at least one, but not more than three sites in each category
I. Place of worship (must not be of the same religion)
II. Community centre/ club / Post Office
III. Road junction (except main roads)/ bridge
IV. Service reservoir/ Telecoms installation/ Trigo. Station/ Bench mark/ lighthouse
V. Fire station/ hospital/ polyclinic / Police Stations / Police post

For categories that have more than one type of checkpoint, you are not to repeat the use of the checkpoint more than twice. E.g. In category III, you are not to have more than 2 bridges as checkpoints
h. Please note that commercial buildings (shopping centres, office buildings and housing blocks), MRT/LRT stations (including MRT depots), bus interchanges, bus terminals and educational institutions are not to be used as checkpoints.
i. Candidates are free to choose any location for their start point EXCEPT MRT/LRT stations.
j. Candidates are to plan their route using only the Singapore 1:50000 topographical map

- Rest point
- There are only 5 approved rest points, which you must choose from. They are:
Changi Beach Park, Pasir Ris Park, East Coast Park, Sembawang Park, West Coast Park
- The MGR of the rest point must be indicated
- Candidates must make provision for shelter
- Candidates are to find out the exact location and contact number of the nearest hospital to the rest point with A&E facilities.

For this hike, all groups are to select Sembawang Park as their resting point.

- Route map
Please include the relevant section of the 1:50000 topographical map. Please highlight the actual route taken with all checkpoints, start point and rest point clearly marked and labeled. Walking on expressways and trespassing on private/ restricted areas is strictly prohibited

Candidates are expected to minimize planning routes using primary roads.

- Ration List/ menu
Include a menu, listing down the items and quantities to be consumed for each meal during the hike. This includes lunch and dinner for the first day as well as breakfast and lunch for the second day. Please also prepare additional rations for emergencies.

- Equipment list
List the items you wish to bring according to two categories, namely, personal items and group list. List down all items in the first aid kit, ensuring that the items are not expired.

- Detailed Lesson Plan
Prepare a lesson plan indicating the location where you will conduct the lesson. The lesson plan is expected to be as detailed as possible. Please also include a copy of the notes that you will distribute to your companions. Candidates may conduct other lessons prior to the hike but at least one must be conducted during the hike.

Please ensure that the lesson is appropriate. E.g. teaching pack a rucksack during the hike might be a little too late.

- Emergency plan and safety precautions/ Risk Assessment Matrix
Candidates are expected to anticipate and be prepared for unforeseen circumstances. List down these circumstances and ways to prevent them from happening. You must also state how you will deal with these situations should they occur. Do a Risk Assessment Matrix for these anticipated circumstances.

5. Execution of the hike
Setting off
Candidates and companions must be ready for inspection at Scout HQ at 0800 on the day of the hike. They can start reporting from 0730 onwards.

Candidates will display all items for inspection

Candidates will provide DUPLICATE copies of the following documents to the examiner during inspection. The documents are:
- Updated emergency contact numbers of candidates as well as companions. (according to the format provided)
- Route map
- MGR/ bearing/ distance list

The candidate and his companions are advised to have their breakfast before reporting

All items listed in the preliminary report must be displayed during inspection. There will be no penalty for additional items but any missing items may result in the loss of marks or even immediate failure

Prohibited items such as electronic items, street directory etc. are not allowed to be brought along during the hike.

Only the candidates are allowed to carry mobile phones.

Candidates are advised against bringing too much money/ valuables

After inspection, the team may set out for the start point. Public transport may be taken to the start point. Candidates and companions must reach the rest point by 2200hrs on the same day.

Along the way
Candidates and companions are to be in scout uniform.

The candidate must account for the whereabouts of companions at all times

Safety and discipline must be the top two priorities

No purchase of items is allowed during the hike

Cheating will result in immediate failure

The hike is only to be carried out on foot

Candidates are advised to spend about 20 min at each checkpoint to gather information for the exploration report.

At the Rest point
Candidates are to inform the examiner of his exact location upon arrival at the rest point. If the candidate is unable to arrive by 2200hrs, the examiner is to be kept informed. This is to be done by SMS.

Candidates and companions are expected to wash up and change into comfortable attire at this point

No visitors, other than those who have been granted permission by the examiner, are allowed.

Sentry duty is expected during the night

Checks by the examiners may be conducted

Candidates and companions may only continue the hike at 0600hrs on the second day

End of the hike
Candidates and companions are expected to reach the final checkpoint by 1700 hrs on the second day of the hike

The companions can be dismissed but the candidates are to complete the exploration report.

Candidates are allowed to bring along a companion each for assistance

Exploration report
Candidates are to hand in the report at a place near Manjusri Secondary School by the date stated in the timeline. The exact location will be made known on the day of the hike itself. Photographs are to be included

The report must be done according to the format given

Please bring along your own stationery

A detailed sketch of each checkpoint locality and rest point, as well as a separate floor plan, where applicable, must be included in the report. Relevant information about the checkpoints must also be included. In cases where the supposed checkpoint has been demolished, candidates should report on the feature that has replaced the checkpoint.

Candidates and companions (less the photographer) must appear on all photographs presented in the report. Candidates must also present a photograph taken at the start point and the rest point.

Celebrating 101 years of scouting this year. On this very day we remember our late founder Lord Stephenson Smith Baden Powell. He who started scouts with just 22 boys on Brownsea Island. And now the world is filled with Scouts living the same promise:

I pormise to do my best,
to do my duty to God, and to the Republic of Singapore.
To help other people,
and to keep the Scout Law.

We should always remeber the promise that we renew every year on this very day.
Not to forget BP's last message before he parted with us:

"Dear Scouts,

If you have ever seen the play Peter Pan you will remember how the pirate chief was always making his dying speech because he was afraid that possibly when the time came for him to die he might not have time to get it off his chest. It is much the same with me, and so, although I am not at this moment dying, I shall be doing so one of these days and I want to send you a parting word of good-bye.

Remember, it is the last you will ever hear from me, so think it over.
I have had a most happy life and I want each one of you to have as happy a life too.

SOUTH EAST AREA FOUNDER’S DAY RALLY 2008

The concept of the event is as follows:
Each Cubs Pack, Scouts Troop, Ventures Unit, Rover Crew of both districts is to send at least 10 members for the event
The representatives will gather at either end of East Coast Park at the starting time
Bedok representatives to gather at the Bedok Jetty end
Katong representatives to gather at the Fort Road end
They will then proceed towards the centre of the Park in district level, signifying the solidarity of each District
Upon reaching the proposed gathering point, they will merge together and interact with the following activities, signifying the camaraderie of the Area:

-Games skills exchanges
-Renewal of the Scout Promise
-Observance of the occasion

The Event Fee is set as S$2.00 by the organizing committee of which the following items will be provided:

Light refreshments
Games Logistics
Event Administration Costs

End of year Exams

Hi to all scouts,

Scouts have stand down till for the END OF YEAR EXAMS already. So please do go study and do well for your exams. Below are some tips to do well for the exams (at least it help me for mine).

Do not do last minute revision. (Scout Motto: Be prepared). Always be prepared for any sort of difficult question and prepare early.
Do lots of practice.
Remember key words like me who always forget long sentences.
Understanding is always better than memorising.
Sleep EARLY the night before. (Do not burn mid-night oil, it's useless).
Prepare all the necessary stationary, don't last minute no ink than get worried. Bring extra pen.
Always be attentive in class because teacher might drop tips here and there when exams are getting close. Be sure to realise what they emphasize. (But also study those that they never emphasize.)
Stay calm on the exam day itself if not your mind will go blank. Meditate if you need to (just by doing simple breathing exercise).
Always skip question that you don't know and do those that you are very confident with.
Do not leave any blank. Always try to attemp the question, you never know you might get some marks for working.

These are some point you can take note of. All the best for your exams. As the scout's hymn goes:" To be the best, the best that i can be!" Always do your best. Whatever the results is, you know that you have done your best.

Scouts will resume on the 20th Oct. Will keep you guys updated again on what we gonna do. Do look at the notice board often. Do well and make your family, scouts but most importantly yourself proud!!!

There will be a meeting for all scouts who are not in PLTC and NDP this sat at 7.30am in school with Full scout uniform, PT Kit and test card.
As from what i know the time for campfire on the consent form is 7.30am. Please take note it is pm not am. We will be meeting at 5.30pm at Serangoon MRT before going to St Gabril Sec Sch for their campfire.

Hi to all scouts,

Thanks for those who came help in the Recruit Training Camp. Especially the ventures. I think all the recruits have had a great experience cooking for theselves and taking care of one another.

Hope all of you have enjoyed your holidays. Some announcement to be made here.

First, for the 7 scouts who are attending PLTC. There will be a compulsory lecture session at HQ on the 23rd June. Please be in your full scout uniform.

There will also be a Civil Defence Course on 1st July for all sec 1 scouts. Please make the whole day free. It will be held at Civil Defence 2nd Division HQ @ Tampinese. Consent form will be given to you when school reopens.

Last, Scouts Training will resume on the 30th of June. Updates will be post on the school's notice board and the blog.

~Preparation for the Minister Visit~

To all scouts,
there will me a minister visit. Scouting will be one of the highlight therefore there are some preparations that we gotta do. The ventures will be building a 7.3m high tower (kind of impressive) and scouts will be supporting them and also build a smaller structure beside them. We are also suppose to also show some scout-craft (e.g. campcook). I will need to meet up with the PLC to plan too.

Please take note of the dates of preparation:
16th March 2007 - Preparation of structure
17th March 2007 - Building of structure
21st March 2007 - Minister Visit (ALL SCOUTS TO BRING THIER FULL UNIFORM)

~Happy Founder's Day~Happy Lunar New Yr~

Happy Founder's Day and also a very prosperous Lunar New Year to all Red Fox Scouts.

100 years of scouting. Let us BE PREPARED for the challenges ahead of us and we will be the best that we can be. Like in the Scouts' Hymn. To be the best, the best that i can be.

Scout Training will resume this Saturday (3rd March 2007). Will be touching on rope work and knots as there will be a major pioneering structure sometime mid march. We will build the major structure on the 17th of March (Saturday) and will have a briefing on the 16th of March (Friday). Keep these days free too.

Jobweek camp is also coming next Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of march. Please keep these 2 days free.

~Investiture 2007~

~Investiture 2007~

Investiture for the sec 1 scouts this year will be held on the 16th Febuary 2007 after the chinese new year celebration in school. It is a prestigious ceremony where new scouts or existing cub scouts officially join the family of scouting. In this ceremony, new scouts will say their promise and the senior will "renew" theirs.

I promise to do my best,
to do my duty to God and to the Republic of Singapore.
To help other people,
and to keep the scout law.

Remember your promise and law. Keep it in heart. Use it in your daily lives. You'll be successful in life. Keep the scouting spirit high. Never give up even though it's tough!!! May the scouting light burn brightly forever!

~Test Week~

Remember that this saturday's meeting is gonna be a test meeting. about 1hr30min is going to be allocated for test taking. All scouts are to be reminded to prepare for the test they want to take and also bring any required items (e.g. collectors badge). Any enquires please call me or your SPLs.
